Prospective Students: FAQ

What do trumpet studio auditions look like?

Studio auditions are held in the fall/winter before the perspective student's first year at UWEC. Studio auditions are very similar to any other audition. The student will prepare a solo repertoire piece and scales along with on-site sight reading during the audition. They will play in front of the brass faculty at UWEC! Good luck!

What are the judges looking for?

Judges always look for sound and rhythm first! Having a good sound means having good tone, being in tune, and expressing dynamics well. You have worked hard on your solo piece! Show them what you can do!

What does a week usually look like for a trumpet player in the studio?

Trumpet players in the studio usually practice 3 or more hours a day and then have one studio class each week that is 2 hours long. In that class they talk about philosophies, trumpet, performing, and sometimes they have guest artists, student performers, or trumpet choir rehearsal.

Where are the auditions?

The auditions are either held at Haas Fine Arts Center or The Pablo in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

What ensembles can you be apart of?

All of the ensembles at UWEC include: Symphony band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz band (1-4), Orchestra, University Band, Jazz Combos, and Brass and Woodwind Quintets.
